After 10 years at sea, old fisherman returns to CordovaBy Joy Landaluce
Mark Roye and his partner, Nancy Krill, sailed into town the first of September in "Tamara," their 44-foot steel ketch, 10 years after giving up a long career as owner-operator of fishing boats working throughout Alaska.
In 2000, Roye left Cordova aboard his 91-foot Quin Delta on a delivery trip to Vancouver, having sold out in order to pursue a long-held plan to sail to the more inaccessible regions of the world. And sail they did, some 44,000 miles on "Tamara," built in Sweden for such high adventures.
Long familiar with Cordova's harbor and intending to spend several seasons cruising Alaska including the Aleutians and Bering Sea, Roye and Krill were confident Cordova would offer a good base for future operations.
"Coming back to Cordova was a homecoming for Mark, who had kept his commercial boats here for nearly 20 years. The first night in town we were invited to a Trident Seafoods fisherman appreciation event, where Mark reunited with many of his old friends," Krill said. "Several commented on seeing us come into the harbor and noting that "Tamara" looked like a serious cruiser, later to find out it was Mark's boat."
When Roye and Krill took possession of "Tamara" in Fort Lauderdale in March 2000, the only real plan they had at the time was to cruise up the East Coast to Newfoundland and Labrador in maritime and Arctic Canada, and winter over in Portland, Maine. They enjoyed Newfoundland and Labrador so much they cruised north from Portland every summer for the next four years. After years considering the route to the West Coast they settled on the classic route around South America, and in 2005 set sail for the Pacific via Cape Horn.
The voyage was to take two years, but as all cruising plans do, it evolved to include extended stays in Argentina and Chile, a visit to the Falkland Islands, teaching English to the Chilean Coast Guard near Cape Horn, a stint as master and mate on a motor yacht resembling a Bering Sea crabber and a six-week cruise of Antarctica. Four years later they sailed into Cordova.
Roye, as writer, and Krill, as photographer, have documented their journey, from the Canadian Arctic to Alaska via Cape Horn, Antarctica, Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia, on their Web site, www.krillroye.com and their blog www.krillroye.blogspot.com.
The couple intends to winter in their home in Port Townsend, Wash., and cruise Alaska in the summers.
